Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a transponder key and a proximity key?
A transponder key has a chip embedded in the key head that must be within a few centimetres of the ignition barrel. A proximity key (smart key or keyless key) works at range — the car detects it passively and allows the engine to start without inserting the key. We program both types.
Can a transponder key be reprogrammed if it's stopped working?
Sometimes yes. If the key has been accidentally wiped or lost its programming, it can often be reprogrammed. In other cases the chip has failed and a new key blank is needed. We diagnose the actual cause before quoting any work.
My new key blade fits perfectly but the engine won't start — can you fix this?
This is the classic sign of an unprogrammed transponder chip. We can program the new key to your immobiliser at your vehicle, usually within an hour. This is one of the most common jobs we carry out.
Can you program a key I've bought online?
Possibly, depending on the blank type and your vehicle model. Some aftermarket blanks are fully compatible with our equipment; others are not. Call before purchasing — we can advise on which blanks work with your specific vehicle and save you a wasted purchase.
Do you also program remote fob functions?
Yes. Remote locking, unlocking and boot release are synchronised alongside the transponder programming. We can also re-sync a remote fob that's lost its pairing independently, without replacing the key.
